This case was before the Registered Designs Appeal Tribunal. Apple applied to register several icon designs (each called “Computer display screens with computer generated icon”) under the previous design legislation (not the new law). The Design Registry refused the applications as not relating to a design applied to an article, following their usual practice at that time for icons which were not "hard-wired".
Apple appealed.

The judge decided that the icon was registrable under the previous legislation, and added that the same was definitely true under the new legislation in acordance with Directive 98/71 on the Legal Protection of Designs.
